Reptile day

Gorgeous weather today so the kids came with me to the park. In our favorite froggy pond we saw some tadpoles and a frog the size of my palm, sunning himself by the water. And not far away, something I haven't seen before - an orange garter snake, at least 15 inches long. Unfortunately, Roxy went running by and scared him off before I could get a photo.

Update on Caleb's wrist

We saw the orthopedist this afternoon, and got new xrays. She (Dr Danielle Katz!) said that the resident (Dan) did a great job setting it and putting on the cast, and that it's healing very well. We have to go back one more time, next week - she said that if it's still in place after two weeks, it will almost always heal correctly. She said he should wear the cast about 6 weeks total, so that's only 5 more weeks. (It'll be off in plenty of time for summer swimming!) We're so glad that it's healing right and of course we're (still) grateful we have insurance!

Super arm redux

Caleb broke his left wrist yesterday (now both arms have been "super") - he fell playing ball in the school playground (only the 2nd day they went outside during the afterschool program!) We went to Urgent Care & waited 2 hours there & then it took an hour for an x-ray and a splint. They told us (insisted really) that we see the orthopedist at Upstate b/c of where the break was (at the epiphysis - the end of the bone, also called the growth plate). 2 hrs in the Upstate waiting room and then another 2 hrs for more x-rays, 3 shots of lidocaine (Caleb seems very resistent to pain killer - they gave some viocin orally and that didn't have much effect either), setting the wrist (NO FUN FOR ANYONE) and a cool green cast (2nd yr ortho resident who took care of us was great, and cute too). We got home at 2 a.m. Caleb was a trooper and my thought the whole time, as always, was "thank heavens I have health insurance"!! As my friend at work said, tough way to get a three day weekend. We have a followup appt with the pediatric orthopedist (Danielle Katz!) next Thursday. He'll have to wear the cast about 2 months. No swimming, no gym class.

Busy Sunday

After Sunday school, we stopped by the Katea's house to drop off stuff that I'd been collecting for them, including this inside basketball hoop.

Saturday = Salon Day

While Caleb went to see Race to Witch Mountain with is friend Jake this afternoon, Alana and I went to the nail salon - Alana got a manicure and I got a pedicure. As you can see in this picture, Alana picked out a nice shade of pink and then had some sparkly gold put on top.

Scout Shabbat at Temple Concord

Caleb (who can't be seen in these photos) was quite excited to attend the Temple's annual scout shabbat service (now that he's a cub scout). He got a beautiful Shabbat patch to put on his uniform shirt. (That's Alana in the pink coat on the left.)

First sign of spring

Other than a few green blades of grass, these brave little shoots, pushing up next to the stream, are the first real sign of spring that I've seen this year.

Scouting

Caleb and Alana delivered flyers to houses in our neighborhood - next week we're collecting aluminum cans for the Cub Scouts.
